June 17, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

At a moment when movements for racial justice are challenging the commemorative landscape of America, how should institutions like the National Park Service respond? And how does this issue intersect with efforts to revisit the legacy of the Founding Fathers, especially in the lead up to the 250th Commemoration of the Revolution? This event will examine the vandalism of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Philadelphia—the words “committed genocide” spray-painted next to a statue of George Washington—as a starting point for these complex questions. Speakers include Dr. Erika Doss (Professor of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame), Rachel Adler (Architectural Conservator with the National Park Service), and Bill Caughlan (Ranger at Independence National Historical Park).
