The First French Brigade spent the night of September 5/6, 1781, on this campsite in Chester, their twenty-eighth camp since departure from their first camp in Providence, Rhode Island, on June 18, 1781; the next morning it marched on to Wilmington, Delaware. The Second French Brigade occupied the same site on the night of September 6/7, 1781.
