DESCRIPTION:On Thursday July 16th at 6:30 PM\, the BoRIA alongside our partner the Portsmouth Historical Society (PHS) present the annual Col. Burton C. Quist Lecture Series at the PHS Museum\, 870 East Main Rd. in Portsmouth. This year\, historian and author\, Christian McBurney will present “Causes of the American Revolution: Why did the thirteen colonies declare their independence 250 years ago?” Yes\, “no taxation without representation” was a real thing\, but there was much more too. This talk is intended to address the underlying causes of the American Revolution by looking at political\, economic\, social\, demographic\, geographical\, immigration\, racial\, and ideological factors. \nChristian McBurney is the author of eleven books\, six on the American Revolutionary War and nine on Rhode Island (four are on both). His next book will be on Rhode Island’s “Black Regiment.” He is also the editor and publisher of a leading Rhode Island history blog at smallstatebighistory.com. Christian resides with his wife near Bethesda\, Maryland\, and they have a second home in West Kingston\, Rhode Island. \nThis talk is our fourth annual under the banner of “The Col. Burton C. Quist Lecture Series”\, in memory of our late founding Director\, friend\, and mentor who passed away in January\, 2023. This event is free and open to the public and will be filmed for our website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Donuts at the Fort
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 21 May\, Nick Edwards\, the Secretary of State’s Program Coordinator for the RI250 Commission will speak at “Coffee and Donuts at the Fort.” The RI250 Commission\, which is Chaired by Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea\, is the State’s coordinating body for all events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Nick will discuss the Commission’s work in support of this anniversary\, the Semiquincentennial. “Coffee and Donuts at the Fort” begins at 9 a.m. at Butts Hill Fort\, the largest\, extant Revolutionary War earthwork in southern New England. The program will also include a short program to introduce municipal officials\, State legislators\, the Congressional delegation\, heritage groups\, and historical societies to the Fort\, its significance\, and the work of the Butts Hill Fort Restoration Commission. The program includes a brief tour of the Fort. The event is hosted by the Battle of Rhode Island Association. The event is free but reservations are required and the number of reservations is limited. Reservations must be made with Nancy Crawford (redhatscrapper@cox.net). Those attending will receive by return email directions to the Fort and parking instructions.\n \nThe BUTTS HILL FORT RESTORATION COMMITTEE is a committee of the BATTLE OF RHODE ISLAND ASSOCIATION. The mission of the Committee is to restore and maintain the Revolutionary War fort in order to provide a safe and accessible educational and recreational site that raises public interest in this National Historic Landmark and its role in the Battle of Rhode Island. The Association is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit committed to raising awareness of Rhode Island’s role in the War for Independence.
