Part of the NHS’s ongoing 250th-anniversary commemorations\, French in Newport highlights the enduring alliance that helped secure American independence. \nStep into Revolutionary-era Newport for a day of living history\, performances\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities commemorating the arrival of General Rochambeau and the French forces in 1780. DESCRIPTION:The French are coming!\n  \n\n  \n  \nIn July 1780\, thousands of French troops landed in Newport beginning an occupation that lasted for nearly a year. The presence of this new ally represented a turning point in the American Revolution and the start of the Franco-American Alliance. While French troops played a vital role in American victory at Yorktown in 1781\, Newport citizens were far from welcoming upon their arrival. On Friday July 14\, 2023 and Saturday July 15\, 2023\, the Newport Historical Society will showcase aspects of this pivotal point in American history during the French in Newport living history weekend\, a free two-day event about life in the summer of 1780. \nThe French in Newport Event will feature living historians portraying recognizable figures such as George and Martha Washington\, the Marquis de Lafayette and the Marquis de Chastellux along with the head of the French army\, comte de Rochambeau. Dozens of costumed living historians representing both civilians and French soldiers will discuss the challenges of establishing this new alliance. Programming will be rooted at Washington Square and surrounding sites such as the Colony House\, the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House and the Brick Market. \nThe NHS will partner with the Museum of the American Revolution’s First Oval Office Project\, a hand-sewn replica of George Washington’s sleeping tent\, which will be exhibited at Washington Square. Washington met with Rochambeau and other French leaders under canvas throughout the campaign of 1781. Individually decorated box pews reflect early owner’s tastes and three English stained-glass windows and two important Tiffany windows date from c.1900. Trinity Church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

SUMMARY:French Officers’ (1780) Grave Marker Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Trinity Church records indicate that three French officers were buried in its Churchyard in 1780. Only the grave of Admiral Charles-Henri-Louis d’Arsac\, chevalier de Ternay\, whose fleet brought 5\,000 French troops to Newport\, is currently marked with a stone. Newspaper articles from 1780 confirm that chaplains said prayers for the dead aboard French ships and performed the burial rites at Trinity Church with full military honors. The contributions of Lt. Augustin Benjamin Lavilmarais of the French Frigate l’Hermione and Major Pierre du Rousseau Chevalier de Fayolle\, who was a friend and aide to Lafayette\, will be remembered with new slate markers carved by Nick Benson of Newport’s John Stevens Shop. The ceremony will be conducted by members of WARO\, the American Society of Le Souvenir Français\, American Friends of Lafayette\, American Battlefield Trust\, and Alliance Français\, with an anticipated presentation by the Ambassador of France to the United States\, H.E. Philippe Étienne. For more information please visit www.NewportHistory.org. \nAbout Trinity Church  \nTrinity Episcopal Church\, built in 1726 by master-builder Richard Munday and based on Georgian designs by Sir Christopher Wren\, was the earliest Anglican parish in Rhode Island (1698). The bell tower\, built in 1769\, stands at 150 feet and leans slightly to the north. Restored in 1986\, the interior has the original center aisle\, triple-tiered wine glass pulpit. The pipe organ was a gift of Rev’d Dr. George Berkeley in 1733. The church’s first organist\, Charles Theodore Pachelbel\, assembled its 508 pipes. Individually decorated box pews reflect early owner’s tastes and three English stained-glass windows and two important Tiffany windows date from c.1900. Trinity Church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.
