SUMMARY:Lafayette\, Beyond "The Hero of Two Worlds"
DESCRIPTION:To mark the celebrations of Lafayette Day in New England\, the Cultural Service of the French Consulate in Boston is pleased to present a lecture by French journalist Laurent Zecchini on his recent biography of Lafayette – ‘Herald of freedom’. This talk will be in English. \nZecchini shines new light on the character involved in the great political upheavals of the 18th and 19th centuries. He explores the ‘Lafayette paradox’\, a figure with hero status in America\, yet disliked in the history of France. He seeks to move beyond the clichés of Lafayette\, idolized by some as the “hero of two worlds” and caricatured by others as vain and naive. In doing so\, Zecchini restores the complexity of a man with an epic destiny. \nAbout the author:  \nLaurent Zecchini spent 35 years of his career at the French daily «Le Monde». As a correspondent in New Delhi\, London\, Washington\, Brussels and Israel\, he covered wide-ranging issues from US domestic policy to European defense. \nHe left Le Monde at the end of 2014 to teach journalism at Sciences Po\, and to write his biography of Lafayette\, published in May 2019. \nSign up here

DESCRIPTION:Invitation \nThe Massachusetts Lafayette Society and the W3R-US will present an historical double-header on Saturday\, December 16\, 2017 at the Bunker Hill Museum in Charlestown\, MA at 1:30 p.m. \nGame 1 \nDr. Robert Selig\, the National Park Service Historian for the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route\, will summarize his Massachusetts report on W3R trails in the Commonwealth. \nThe Massachusetts routes include (1) the prequel route whereby in April of 1780 Lafayette landed in Boston – having sailed on L’Hermione and proceeded to Morristown\, NJ to tell General Washington that the French Expeditionary Force was coming\, (2) an excursion trip that General Rochambeau made travelling from Newport\, RI in which he visited Bunker Hill and Washington’s Headquarters in Cambridge\, now the Longfellow House\, and (3) the departure route by which the French Army marched from Rhode Island to Boston in December of 1782 to board ships bound for the West Indies. \nIntermission \nLight refreshments will be served. \nGame 2 \nDavid Noonan\, Vice President of the Massachusetts Lafayette Society\, will speak about a little-known program sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution to support French children who were orphaned during World War I.  At the end of the war the program was ended\, but two Scituate women continued their support and engaged in a poignant correspondence with their “adoptees.” \nRSVP:  Alan Hoffman at arhesq@aol.com or call my cell:  603-490-3950 \n by December 15\, 2017
