DESCRIPTION:After escaping from enslavement in Maryland\, Frederick Douglass became a leading abolitionist renowned for his eloquent oratory and anti-slavery writings. He gave this speech on July 5\, 1852\, in Rochester\, New York.  \nIn his speech\, Douglass referred to the Declaration of Independence as establishing a nation committed to providing opportunity for “life\, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” to all its citizens. In less than a decade\, that nation was embroiled in a civil war about the legitimacy of the enslavement of people of African descent.  \nThe Trent House will present its second annual reading from one of Frederick Douglass’ most famous speeches\, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?\,” along with songs from the period\, on Saturday\, July 5\, 2025\, at 4 pm. The audience will be invited to sing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” during the program.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 14\, 2024\, the Trent House will host a reception to officially reopen the museum and to announce the community organizations whose contributions are recognized in the 2024 Heritage Tree display. \nThe historic house has been closed since June as a new heating and air conditioning system is installed. Once that project is complete\, the house thoroughly cleaned\, and the furnishings back in place\, we will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on the south steps. \nAfter the ribbon cutting\, we will welcome representatives of several community organizations to light the trees they have decorated with symbols of the ways they have enriched our community through their work. \nThe reception will begin at 4 pm and is free to attend.

Hear the drum beats that guided their troops. Practice drilling with African American infantry soldiers of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment and learn about their forebearers’ critical role throughout the Revolution. \n \nTry teas that patriotic women would have served during the Revolution instead of black tea imported from England. Learn about the tools that blacksmiths used in the 1700s and still do today. \n \nHelp the town’s doctor prepare to treat injuries by rolling bandages\, one of many ways civilians assisted the Continental Army. Prepare sweet bags of herbs worn to ward off smallpox. \nThis family-friendly event includes crafts and activities for school-age children and a “scavenger hunt” with prizes. \n \nDelve deeper into the critical contributions of the French to winning the war for America’s independence with Paul Larson. Hear about the diplomatic role that Lafayette played in gaining official French support and his actions on the field\, as well as the military expertise and substantial troops that Rochambeau brought to the conflict. SUMMARY:Hogmanay - A Celebration of the Scottish New Year
DESCRIPTION:Hogmanay is the traditional celebration of the new year in Scotland and the William Trent House Museum commemorates Trent’s Scottish heritage with a Hogmanay program during Trenton’s Patriots Week. \nThis year the program will feature members of the Greater Trenton Pipes and Drums on bagpipes\, a video on making traditional Scottish shortbread\, and retelling of Scottish folktales. Scottish and other treats will be provided along with warm cider and chilled eggnog. Visitors will be encouraged to join in singing Auld Lang Syne and burning written wishes for the new year. \nThis free program will be held outside if weather permits. Indoor space is limited\, so pre-registration is encouraged. Pre-registrants will be admitted in order of registration if the program is held indoors. All pre-registrants will be notified the morning of the event of the program venue and\, if indoors\, their admission status.

DESCRIPTION:There will be something for everyone to see and do on the grounds of the Trent House during the 2nd annual re-enactment of Washington’s and Rochambeau’s encampment at Trenton in August 1781. \nThe Trent House with its partners – Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie\, Lawrence Historical Society\, and the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route Association-New Jersey – is hosting the second re-enactment of Trenton’s role at this critical point in the Revolutionary War. \nThousands of soldiers of the Continental army under General Washington and the French army under General Rochambeau – and the men\, women\, and children who supported them – camped in Trenton half-way through their almost-700 mile march to Virginia. Crossing the Delaware River\, the combined forces continued to Yorktown\, where the Americans and their French allies defeated British General Cornwallis\, ending the War for Independence. \n \nChildren can join a scavenger hunt\, collecting tokens as they participate in each activity and visit each presenter. \nBooks and other prizes will be given. \n \nLe Regiment Bourbonnais\, a French infantry unit\, will set up a military camp on the grounds\, show visitors how ordinary soldiers lived while not on the battlefield. \nThey will demonstrate camp cooking\, teach children how to drill with French commands\, and encourage children and adults to try on articles of their uniforms for photos and to try their luck in dice and card games. \n \nThe 1st Rhode Island Regiment\, known as the “Black Regiment” for its African American soldiers\, will regale visitors with their stories of courage on the battlefield. \n \nAnother Black soldier in the Continental forces\, Ned Hector\, will describe his experiences as a teamster hauling supplies and armaments and as a bombardier who assembled ammunition and placed it in cannon for firing. \n \n​It was not just wounds from the battlefield that thinned the ranks of the armies\, nor was it only soldiers who suffered injury. Very often disease was as deadly an enemy as the opposing army. \nMeet interpreters of medical professionals of the Revolutionary War – surgeons and apothecaries. Examine their equipment and learn how medicines were made.
