    Centennial Celebration of Dr. Roderick Terry saving Butts Hill Fort, Portsmouth, RI

    On Saturday, August 19th at 10:00 am, the Battle of Rhode Island Association (BoRIA) in partnership with the Portsmouth Historical Society (PHS) will mark 100 years since Dr. Roderick Terry, then President of the Newport Historical Society, bought the land on which Butts Hill Fort sits, saving it from being developed. BoRIA and PHS invite the public to join us at BHF to commemorate this event. Paul Revere cannons will be demonstrated by the Artillery Company of Newport who participated in the inaugural event in 1923. The Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums will be on hand to provide the sounds of the event. The 54th Regiment of Foot and the Kingston Reds will give musket demonstrations and colors presentations will be made by the Henry Knox Color Guard from the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution.

    Butts Hill Fort Second Volunteer Summer Cleanup

    The Butts Hill Fort Restoration Committee is inviting volunteers to our 2nd Summer Cleanup on Saturday, August 12th (rain date is August 13th). Cleanup starts at 9 AM and goes on until 4pm. Come anytime. The meeting point is the Fort gate on Butts Hill St. off Sprague Street. Google “26 Butts Street” for directions to the Main Gate. Parking will also be available at the PHS Tennis Courts. Participants are asked to park along Dyer Street. No parking is allowed on Butts Street or in the Fort. The focus of this effort will be to clean up and trim the pathways and grounds surrounding the Fort in preparation for our August 19th public event: The Butts Hill Fort Centennial Celebration of Dr. Roderick Terry’s 1923 Preservation Effort.
