DESCRIPTION:Portsmouth\, Rhode Island. The Butts Hill Fort Restoration Committee (BHFRC) is inviting volunteers to our Spring Cleanup on Saturday\, May 4th. (Rain date May 5th). Cleanup starts at 9 AM and goes on until 1 pm. Come anytime. The meeting point is our blue top check-in tent in the Butts Hill Fort main gate area. Directions: Follow Butts St. from Sprague Street and turn left at the top. Or Google “26 Butts Street” for directions to the Main Gate. Participants are asked to park along Dyer Street or at the Portsmouth High School Tennis Courts. No parking is allowed on Butts Street itself. \n  \nVolunteers will need to sign a town liability form upon arrival at the check in tent. BHFRC staff will be on hand throughout the day\, so if you join in progress\, please sign in with a team member for accountability. Volunteers are also asked to bring gloves\, protective eye gear\, and personal yard/gardening tools such as rakes\, loppers\, shears\, shovels\, or tarpaulins. SUMMARY:Centennial Celebration of Dr. Roderick Terry saving Butts Hill Fort\, Portsmouth\, RI
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 19th at 10:00 am\, the Battle of Rhode Island Association (BoRIA) in partnership with the Portsmouth Historical Society (PHS) will mark 100 years since Dr. Roderick Terry\, then President of the Newport Historical Society\, bought the land on which Butts Hill Fort sits\, saving it from being developed. BoRIA and PHS invite the public to join us at BHF to commemorate this event. Paul Revere cannons will be demonstrated by the Artillery Company of Newport who participated in the inaugural event in 1923. The Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums will be on hand to provide the sounds of the event. The 54th Regiment of Foot and the Kingston Reds will give musket demonstrations and colors presentations will be made by the Henry Knox Color Guard from the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution. \n \nSpeakers include historian Michael J. Simpson who researched Dr. Terry’s life and conservation efforts via funding from the BoRIA and the Redwood Library and Atheneum; Portsmouth’s Town Historian Jim Garman will discuss the Battle of RI and BHF; R.I. Senator Linda L. Ujifusa and Portsmouth’s Town Council Member Charles J. Levesque will speak and lead the rededication. Tours of the fort will be given after the speeches and demonstrations are complete. For a complete schedule of the day’s events go to battleofrhodeisland.org. Parking will be available at Portsmouth High School’s tennis courts. From there it is a short walk to the Fort’s entrance. No parking is allowed on Butts Street or in the Fort. DESCRIPTION:Please join our friends’ the Battle of Rhode Island Association and the Butts Hill Fort Restoration Committee (BHFRC) for the 4th cleanup of Butts Hill Fort! \nThe cleanup will take place between 8am and 2pm\, with Sunday (the 30th) being reserved as a rain date should the weather be inclement on the 29th. \nCleanup efforts will include only removal of deadfall wood and overgrown brush from the ditches and parapet walls on the north\, east\, and south sides of the Fort and weed whacking areas cleared earlier.  There will be NO tree cutting. \nParking is available behind the tennis courts at the Portsmouth High School or on Dyer St.  Please do not park on Butts Street – it must remain clear to allow vehicles with equipment to access the Fort. SUMMARY:Coffee & Donuts at the Fort
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 21 May\, Nick Edwards\, the Secretary of State’s Program Coordinator for the RI250 Commission will speak at “Coffee and Donuts at the Fort.” The RI250 Commission\, which is Chaired by Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea\, is the State’s coordinating body for all events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Nick will discuss the Commission’s work in support of this anniversary\, the Semiquincentennial. “Coffee and Donuts at the Fort” begins at 9 a.m. at Butts Hill Fort\, the largest\, extant Revolutionary War earthwork in southern New England. The program will also include a short program to introduce municipal officials\, State legislators\, the Congressional delegation\, heritage groups\, and historical societies to the Fort\, its significance\, and the work of the Butts Hill Fort Restoration Commission. The program includes a brief tour of the Fort. The event is hosted by the Battle of Rhode Island Association. The event is free but reservations are required and the number of reservations is limited. Reservations must be made with Nancy Crawford (redhatscrapper@cox.net). Those attending will receive by return email directions to the Fort and parking instructions.\n \nThe BUTTS HILL FORT RESTORATION COMMITTEE is a committee of the BATTLE OF RHODE ISLAND ASSOCIATION.
