DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 22\, the Museum will host a special musical performance by the Philadelphia Freedom Band and artist talks in conjunction with “Whiskey Rebellion\,” a special installation by contemporary artist John Y. Wind on display in the second-floor Oneida Indian Nation Atrium throughout June. \nThroughout the day\, guests can meet Wind and dive deeper into the history and meaning of the installation\, which transforms hand-painted\, ceramic decanters of key figures from the American Revolution that were produced by the Jim Beam Distilling Company and their competitors from the 1960s-70s. Wind will lead a guided tour of “Whiskey Rebellion” at 11:15 a.m.\, before exploring his artistic process and inspiration at a pop-up discovery cart with objects and documents from 1­-3 p.m. \nTo kick off the day at 10 a.m.\, the Philadelphia Freedom Band marching band and color guard will hold a special Pride Month performance\, free and open to the public\, on the Museum’s outdoor plaza. The Philadelphia Freedom Band is a non-profit organization comprised of a wide variety of talented musicians\, ranging from amateur to professional which comes together to perform throughout the greater Philadelphia area and provide visible\, active support to the LGBTQ+ community. SUMMARY:Read the Revolution: Vicious and Immoral with John Gilbert McCurdy
DESCRIPTION:In June 1774\, Robert Newburgh\, the chaplain to the 18th Regiment of Foot “stood accused of ‘Vicious and Immoral Behaviour\,’ which broke down into six separate charges: perjury\, prevarication\, falsehood\, ‘Scandalous and Indecent acts\,’ conduct ‘Derogatory from the Sacred Character\, with which he is Invested\,’ and having treated his commanding officer ‘in a Disrespectful manner.’” Stemming from rumors that Newburgh engaged in a same-sex relationship in his native Ireland\, the above charges marred his character and his military career. Newburgh\, stationed in Philadelphia at the start of the Revolutionary War\, spent his time defending himself in multiple court-martials and civil suits\, instead of providing the spiritual guidance for which he was hired. \nDr. John Gilbert McCurdy’s newest book\, Vicious and Immoral: Homosexuality\, the American Revolution\, and the Trials of Robert Newburgh\, which builds on research from his book\, Quarters: The Accommodation of the British Army and the Coming of the American Revolution\, uses the trials of Newburgh as a lens to examine queerness during the late 18th century. McCurdy uses the juxtaposition of rebellion and the status quo to illuminate the drastic difference between Britain’s prosecution of men accused of having same-sex relationships and the growing “lack of interest in prosecuting homosexuality” in the burgeoning American republic. DESCRIPTION:Liberty’s Daughters:\nThe Revolutionary Experience of American Women\, 1750–1800\n  \nWritten by Dr. Mary Beth Norton\nA groundbreaking book when it was first published in 1980\, Dr. Mary Beth Norton’s Liberty’s Daughters: The Revolutionary Experience of American Women\, 1750–1800 would make Abigail Adams proud. Taking Adams’s charge to “remember the ladies” to a new\, scholarly level\, Norton mined the family papers of approximately 450 18th-century families\, disproving the idea that sources on women were scarce. As she explains\, she wanted to “examine eighteenth-century women’s self-perceptions\, the influence of their sexual identity on all phases of their lives\, and\, perhaps\, most importantly\, the impact of the American Revolution upon them.” \nThrough the words of the women themselves\, Norton discovered that a kind of “golden age” of equality for women in the 1600s and 1700s did not really exist and that the Revolutionary War had a significant impact on women’s lives during those years and after. The excerpt below resonates with the way stories of the lived experience of the American Revolution are told in the Museum’s galleries. As Norton notes\, “Most narratives of the Revolutionary War concentrate upon describing a series of pitched battles between uniformed armies. If she must be a Beggar\, it should be where she was known.” Hannah Iredell’s sister Jean Blair made the same choice in 1781 when the redcoats neared her North Carolina home. “The English are certainly at Halifax but I suppose they will be every where & I will fix myself here it is as safe as any where else & I can be no longer tossed about\,” she declared. The Philadelphian Elizabeth Farmar also decided to stay in her house\, despite the fact that it lay between the lines during the occupation of the city in 1777–1778. As a result\, she\, her husband\, and their daughter were endangered by frequent gunfire\, had difficulty obtaining adequate food supplies\, and suffered “manny cold days” that winter because the British confiscated their firewood\, “Notwithstanding we thought ourselves well of[f] in comparison to some\,” she remarked in 1783. “Most of the houses near us have been either burnt or pulled down as would have been the case with us if we had not stayd in it even at the hasard of our lives.” \n  \nRead More

Joining Winch onstage will be Kip Forten Jacobs\, the great-great-great-great grandson of James Forten\, who will reflect on how discovering her book — and his own family heritage — changed his life. Winch and Jacobs also will discuss their involvement in the Museum’s special exhibition Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia\, which includes the Forten family Bible\, an heirloom that has been in the family for six generations\, that Jacobs loaned to the Museum for display in the exhibit. \nMore About A Gentleman of Color\n \nA Gentleman of Color\, written by Winch in 2002\, was the first full–length biography of James Forten\, a hero of African American history and one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Born into a free Black family in 1766\, Forten served as a privateer during the Revolutionary War as a teenager. By 1810\, he had earned the distinction of being the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia. Forten emerged as a leader in Philadelphia’s Black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. DESCRIPTION:When James Forten walked the streets of 1770s Philadelphia as a young man\, he was surrounded by the sights and sounds of revolutionary transformation. He heard the words of the Declaration of Independence read aloud for the first time in 1776 before setting sail to fight for independence in 1781. Born a free man of African descent\, Forten built upon his coming-of-age in a revolutionary city and his wartime experience to forge himself into a changemaker in Philadelphia and the young United States\, becoming a successful businessman\, philanthropist\, and stalwart abolitionist. \nJoin us Feb. 11-12 for the opening weekend of our newest special exhibition Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia\, open from Feb. 11 through Nov. 26\, 2023. Throughout the exhibit in the Museum’s first-floor Patriots Gallery\, visitors will be introduced to Forten and his descendants as they navigated the American Revolution and cross-racial relationships in Philadelphia to become leaders in the abolition movement in the lead-up to the Civil War and the women’s suffrage movement.
