SUMMARY:Symposium: Washington's Middlebrook Encampments of the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:“Valley Forge” and “Morristown” are famous names of winter encampments of George Washington and the Continental Army\nduring arduous winters of the American Revolution. Less famously—but with equal strategic importance—the Continental\nArmy also encamped twice in Somerset County\, at a place called “Middlebrook.” \nThe strategic significance of Somerset County’s two Middlebrook encampments will be the subject of a new series of\n“Middlebrook Symposia” being organized by nearly a dozen local history organizations with funding by the Somerset County\nCultural & Heritage Commission. The first will be held October 28\, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM\, at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg\, New Jersey. Everyone is invited\, but advance registration is required at https://heritagetrail.org. \nThe registration cost is $35 for adults and $20 for students (ID required) and includes lunch. Early registration is encouraged\nbecause space is limited. Books will be available for purchase and signing. \nThe October 28 symposium will begin with Somerset County Commissioner Director Robinson describing the County’s plans for the 250th anniversary of the nation in 2026. She will be followed by a presentation entitled “Middlebrook 101: George\nWashington Remembers Middlebrook\,” presented by a reenactor of George Washington\, in character. Next will be three authors of recent books about the Revolutionary War in Central Jersey: Arthur Lefkowitz discussing his book George Washington’s Revenge; Robert Mayers\, author of Middlebrook: The Revolutionary Encampment that Saved America; and Dominick Mazzagetti\, who authored Charles Lee: Self Before Country.
