W3R-DE Commemorates the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge

On Saturday, September 5th, the State of Delaware paused to commemorate the 1777 Battle of Cooch’s Bridge, where General George Washington’s Continental Army confronted advancing British and Hessian forces during the Philadelphia Campaign.

The battle took place just one week before the Battle of Brandywine, which was followed by the British capture of Philadelphia.

The commemoration was sponsored by the Pencader Heritage Association, the historic organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the battlefield and its surrounding history.

W3R-DE has also helped preserve the site’s military legacy by erecting monuments honoring both the American forces who fought there in 1777 and the combined French-American armies that later crossed Cooch’s Bridge during the 1781 march toward Yorktown.

Together, these efforts help connect the battlefield’s Revolutionary War history with the broader story of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route and the Franco-American campaign that ultimately helped secure American independence.
