W3R-DE is working with a Trail community church to recognize four African American Civil War veterans buried in an African American church graveyard that sits directly on the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail, just a few miles from the 1777 Cooch’s Bridge Battlefield. This small cemetery connects two pivotal eras in American history—the Revolutionary War and the long struggle for freedom and equality that continued into the Civil War and beyond.
With the church’s support and partnership from American Legion Post 10, W3R-DE is helping to ensure that these veterans receive the formal recognition they deserve. Plans are underway for a ceremony that will honor their service and sacrifice and mark their graves appropriately so that visitors can better understand their place in the larger American story.
